How to Dispose of and Sort Garbage

Household garbage is separated into five different categories (for detailed information please read the above PDF) –

  1. burnable garbage
  2. non-burnable garbage
  3. recyclable garbage
  4. harmful garbage
  5. hazardous garbage.

Please find out the designated time and location of collection for your area and dispose of your garbage in accordance with the local collection rules. Usually burnable and non-burnable garbage collection areas is a designated street location with nets or cages. Usually the collection area for harmful, hazardous and recycle garbage is a local community center (kominkan).

If you do not know your disposal locations, please call the Environmental Management Division at City Hall on 0986-24-5560 (Japanese only).

Garbage bags

Burnable and non-burnable garbage must be disposed of in their designated bags. Bags must be purchased and are sold at supermarkets, convenient stores, and drug stores.

- Burnable or non-burnable designated bag: Shitei gomi bukoro (指定ごみ袋)

It has the following written in blue on the front: 都城市 指定ごみ袋. This bag can be used for both burnable and non-burnable garbage. But do not mix both in one bag.

-  Non-burnable designated bag: Moyasenai gomi senyou (燃やせないごみ専用)

Disposal of Volcanic Ash

Volcanic ash can be disposed of in any plastic bag as long as you separate the ash from all other materials (don't mix it in with your other garbage) and make sure the bag is thick enough that it does not rip when you carry it (please consider at least double-bagging).  Take the bags of ash to wherever you bring your non-burnable garbage, and make sure it is piled separately from the rest of the garbage.  If the bags you are using for your ash are not clear, please consider writing 灰 on the bag to help garbage collectors identify which bags contain ash.  Also, please do not wash your ashes into the gutter.  This creates drainage problems and makes it harder to clean things up.
